This is a good time of year to look at how far you’ve travelled with your writing this year – and to gather inspiration for ideas to work on during the winter.

NaNoWriMo starts on 1st November. Writers around the world plan to write 50,000 words during the month of November. You can sign up to the website if you want to and upload your daily total. You can also make this a private commitment. You can work on whatever you like. Nobody else needs to see it. It can be a good way of getting a very basic first draft onto paper. Remember that first drafts are meant to be messy and chaotic. You can re-write and tidy up later.

I usually begin with a special celebration on Halloween. I light a candle and write down what I am intending to do in November.  I finish with another celebration at the end of the month when I review what I have achieved.

Remember that any additional words that you write will be a step in the right direction of completing a project. Don’t worry about getting them right. Get them written!
