I’m really excited to have been shortlisted in this playwriting competition. I took a chance on a slightly crazy idea prompted by a character’s voice in my head at 3.00 a.m. last November. “I know I’m not from your planet,” she said, “but I’d like to be in your play. I sat snuggled under a blanket and completely re-wrote what I’d originally planned to send them. I typed it up the next morning with no changes. Then – inspired by a little stone on my desk that says ‘take the risk’ – I pressed ‘send.’
The stone came from friend in Cornwall – Jacky Blakeway from Magnetic Earth Studios!
I was really surprised to be contacted and asked to send the rest of the play by early January (I had to write it!) and even more surprised to end up being shortlisted.
It is also great that Malvern Theatres decided to organise a Showcase for the shortlisted plays.
It has been a privilege to be working with local actors Skye Witney, Nilufer Betik and Mike Nicholas. I have learned so much in a short time.
The Showcase features extracts from the three shortlisted plays:
Belladonna by Sarah Hutton
Until The Cows Come Home by Cathie Rolinson
Land of Hope by Sue Johnson
It is lovely to have met Sarah and Cathie too!
